Ambos usos (palacio y santuario) no habrían sido incompatibles. Las investigaciones de las últimas décadas, en cambio, han descartado el supuesto carácter militar de Machu Picchu (por lo que los populares calificativos de "fortaleza" o "ciudadela" han sido superados).
